The Great Exchange

Involved in a Startup competition where my team pitched a children's kit focusing on interpersonal skills. With my team, we worked on a 7-month concept and pitch where I ideated and created designs that would best present our idea. Our team place 1st in the competition (May 2021, Biola University)

My Role: Product Designer & Illustrator | Tools: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Indesign, Procreate, Figma | Timeline: 7 months

Project Overview
This was for a start-up competition at my University where my team pitched the idea of a children's kit that would focus on soft skills, highlighting the importance of communication and building up the confidence to speak up and be curious. During this duration, my team created and beta tested 1 kit and my role was the create the illustrations and integrate them into the kit's design.
Research
I first brainstormed the design layout and how the characters / illustrations could fit into the kit. A few things that the kit included were materials for the activities and pamphlets for instruction / guidance. I sketched out character ideas, which were drawn inspiration from stuffed animals children's love, and non-human characters from stories such as Mr. Men.
Design Process: Character Design
After consulting with my team. we wanted to solidify a single character and call it MC (main character). From my sketches, I chose 1 iteration and made various poses of it. The character is created with one of the commonly associated human face shapes, with a body form of a stuffed animal. Once MC was finalized, I created MC doing various actions that matched the description for the kit.
Design Process: Illustration and Animations
Alongside illustrations and the development of MC, there are additional illustrations created to visually convey aspects of the kit's story. I also created some GIFs, which were included in the pitch presentation that we send for the competition. These short animations consist of our characters (there are a few side characters who are MC's friends), materials, and our logo.
Final Concept Products: Activity Items and Kit Box Exterior
Here are a few examples of where my illustration went in the kit. One part was adding it to a calendar, which children could use to keep track of what activities they did after utilizing the kit. More illustrations are implemented in the pamphlet and the box exterior.
